Naked women and cheese. WTF?!

This morning while searching Google images for a good photo for a brand presentation, I stumbled across this advertising classic.

I’m a bit lost for words – but I think my point would be to say, my, haven’t we come a long way?!  Fortunately, for most of us advertising professionals, this sort of advertising is unthinkable these days.

What anyone was thinking a naked woman had to do with “pasteurized process cheese spread” is beyond me.  (Yes, I know, obviously Velveeta spread and velvet skin.  Thank goodness they weren’t trying to convey it’s easy to spread.  Hmm.)

  • Sad fact of the reality is that the majority of people now would look at the advert and not feel confused, curious or even mildly outraged. It has to be way over-simplistic to put this advertising down to ‘sex-sells’ or the ‘get people talking about the product’ motivation. I don’t think that either of those were primary motivations for this advert – it just seems like a slammed-together graphic to put the product name out there. Hell, the is not even a diet motivation – eating this cheese wont cause weight gain.

Strangely, I’m not offended by it – in fact, I feel completely ambivalent about it. Would I buy it? Nope – it looks like crappy cheese and I don’t want to eat anything that a naked person has sat on. The only thing I’m curious about is why the CEO has not sacked the Head of Marketing.

Right…thats my 2 cents worth – now off to explore Google Images. Might try ‘bacon’ first….
